Last March 30, 2026, at Lakeland Gym, the Filling The Lane community, parents, coaches, and student-athletes—gathered for a powerful and eye-opening session with our partner, Conner Custodio.
And one message stood above the rest:
If we want better athletes, we must first build stronger minds.
A Message That Hit Home
Conner challenged everyone with a truth that resonates deeply in today’s sports culture:
“No matter how good you are—if you can’t regulate your emotions, that becomes the bigger problem.”
In a world where performance is often prioritized, many young athletes are never taught how to handle pressure, anxiety, or emotional triggers. Conner emphasized the importance of slowing down and asking a simple but powerful question:
👉 “Why am I acting this way?”
That moment of reflection can be the difference between reacting and responding.
Understanding What’s Beneath the Surface
One of the most impactful discussions centered on how young people respond to stress.
Conner explained that many reactions we see, frustration, anger, even withdrawal, are actually natural responses, not defiance. For example, when something like a phone is taken away, the brain reacts instinctively.
Instead of suppressing these reactions, he encouraged parents and coaches to guide young athletes with curiosity:
“Why are you overwhelmed right now?”
“What’s going on inside your mind?”
For many kids, the reality is this:
They’ve never learned how to be still, process emotions, or feel safe without constant stimulation.
Practical Steps for Families
Beyond inspiration, Conner shared practical steps families can apply immediately.
One key takeaway:
👉 Have kids sleep with their phones outside their room.
This simple habit can:
Improve sleep quality
Reduce overstimulation
Help young athletes reconnect with stillness and rest
Small changes like this can create a big impact over time.
A Coach Who Understands the Journey
Conner’s message is grounded in both experience and expertise.
As a lifelong athlete who competed in track, basketball, and CrossFit, he understands the pressure of performance. Over the years, he has coached more than 500 athletes, combining:
Performance coaching
Nervous system regulation
Cognitive behavioral strategies
Trauma-informed care
His mission is clear: to help athletes build confidence that isn’t dependent on results.
The Bigger Mission
This session reinforced what Filling The Lane stands for:
We are not just developing athletes—we are shaping people.
Mental health and emotional awareness are not optional—they are essential. And with partners like Conner, we are taking intentional steps toward building a stronger, more resilient generation.
Much Bigger Than Basketball
This is Filling The Lane.
Not just wins. Not just exposure. Not just performance.
But purpose, growth, and transformation—on and off the court.
