Honoree Spotlight: Frederick Heid

Community Leader Award | Voices 2026

When Frederick Heid was unanimously selected in April 2021 to lead Polk County Public Schools, he stepped into one of the largest and most complex educational systems in the nation. Serving more than 117,000 students, Polk County Public Schools ranks among the 30 largest districts in the United States and the seventh-largest in Florida.

Under Superintendent Heid’s leadership, the district has demonstrated measurable academic progress—most notably earning a “B” grade from the Florida Department of Education. Over the past three years, the district has made meaningful gains in reading, math, science, and social studies, reflecting a clear commitment to instructional excellence and student achievement.

Superintendent Heid brings a well-rounded background in education. Prior to Polk County, he served as Superintendent of District 300 in Algonquin, Illinois. His career also includes roles as a classroom teacher, middle school principal, Bureau Chief for School Improvement with the Florida Department of Education, and Chief Academic Officer for Duval County Public Schools. This breadth of experience has shaped his strategic, student-focused leadership style.

Beyond academics, Mr. Heid has championed system-wide initiatives that prepare students for both college and career pathways. From strengthening campus safety measures to implementing a districtwide one-to-one technology initiative—ensuring every student has access to a laptop or tablet—his administration has prioritized access, innovation, and opportunity.

He has also expanded career and technical education across the district, overseeing nearly 30 certified or model career academies. High-impact programs such as the Central Florida Aerospace Academy expansion and the launch of a new air traffic control program provide students with real-world pathways that extend far beyond graduation.

For Filling The Lane, Superintendent Heid has been a trusted and accessible partner. When students face challenges related to academics, behavior, or graduation pathways, he consistently supports collaborative, student-centered solutions—ensuring young people are guided forward rather than left behind.

His vision, integrity, and unwavering dedication to student success make Superintendent Frederick Heid a deserving recipient of the 2026 Filling The Lane Community Leader Award.
